Some homeowners are the hands-off type; they have no problem trusting a professional to take a home improvement job from A to Z. Others, however, need a little more information before they can leave the work to a stranger. They want to know all the materials used and understand the process before they’re comfortable paying for the work. No matter what type of homeowner you are, Ai Restoration can accommodate you!
Ai Restoration is a Northampton County stucco replacement company, and we’re here to lay out all you need to know about stucco installation and repair. We’ve been in the stucco business for over 17 years and have transformed thousands of homes in our area; that’s why they call us the stucco specialists!
First things first, what is stucco? Stucco is usually a mix of sand, cement, lime and water. It lasts for decades and requires very little maintenance.
There are three main processes (or systems) for applying stucco:
- One Coat System – In this system, foam is nailed to the wall and wire is put on top. Next, a base coat of fiber-fused cement is applied. Finally, a finish coat is put on top. In the one coat system, the cement is about 3/8 inches thick. This system can be a cost-effective alternative to other stucco systems like the three coat system, described below.
- Three Coat System – In this more advanced system, a water-resistant paper is placed over top of a sheeting of plywood, then wire is nailed on top. Next, a “scratch coat” and a “brown coat” are applied and finally a top coat. The three coat system is generally preferred, since it’s tough, durable and long lasting. Before moving into a stucco home, it’s good to know which system of application was used.
- EIFS – EIFS stands for exterior insulation and finish Systems. During this process, a sheeting of plywood is applied, then a dense foam is put on top. Finally, two thick layers of a cement-based material are applied to complete the job. This process is used more often on commercial buildings than residential.
